Common Cold Forging Products Manufacturing Processes

There are many cold forging products in the market today. In fact, almost all the utensils and cutlery you use in your home are cold-forged. But one thing that is lost to many is to understand that there are many types of the cold forging process.

Yes, the parts or products could be cold-forged but using different techniques. What determines the cold forging process use is the products being forged and also the properties needed. Here are some of the common cold forging processes:

Bending

Bending is usually used to change the shape of the workpiece and could also be one of the stages of another cold forging process. The process requires a press and die to perform. The workpiece is forced against the die, where its shape is altered as desired.

Cold Rolling

As the name suggests, rolling is a cold forging process where the workpiece is placed between two rolling rollers. The compressive force applied by the rollers is enough to cause plastic deformation, and that’s how forgings are made. It is ideal for the manufacturing of metal sheets.

Closed Die

This is probably one of the most popular forms of cold forging. As the name suggests, the workpiece is enclosed on dies, and compressive force is applied. The force will cause plastic deformation of the billet, and it will take the shape of the dies, which is the shape and size of the desired forging.

Drawing

The drawing forging process includes pulling or drawing the workpiece through the die by the use of tensile strength at the die axis. The billet is pulled through a die that has a smaller cross-sectional area or diameter. The technique is usually used for forging tubes, rods, wires, and so on.

Open Die

Open die cold forging is widely used in the industrial setup. The method is used in the manufacturing of large forging parts that cannot use enclosed dies. A good example is the construction of the ship shafts and so on. The workpiece is worked on in the open with two dies without pre-cut profiles.

Ring Forging

Ring forging is another form of cold forging process for making ring-shaped products. The workpiece is punched at the middle, and a set rollers shape to the desired size and shape. A lot of hammering goes on during this forging process.

These are just some of the common cold forging product processes in the industry. You can also check out swaging and extrusion forging processes.
